Dusk Boss Guide: Puppeteer Fight & Puppeteer's Bell
Beat Dusk the Puppeteer in Phantom Blade Zero: kill puppets to damage the boss, read the phase-two split, and claim the Puppeteer Bell.
Dusk, the Puppeteer, waits in the Broken Puppet Pit beneath the Village of Lu. The arena is full of hanging strings, broken frames, and half-finished puppets, and the boss uses all of it. He summons adds, hides behind them, and in phase two splits himself between two bodies.
The fight has one counter-intuitive rule that makes it much easier: killing his puppets damages him. The adds are not a distraction from the boss; they are the health bar.

Kill the puppets, not the boss, when the swarm is up. Keep both halves of the phase-two split in view, and punish Bloody Strings by strafing out of the line before attacking. Dusk drops the Puppeteer's Bell.
Location and reward
| Detail | Answer |
|---|---|
| Region | Village of Lu, Broken Puppet Pit |
| Type | Mandatory story boss |
| Reward | Puppeteer's Bell (Summoning Phantom Edge) |
| Key mechanic | Puppet adds damage the boss when destroyed |
| Phase two | Dusk splits into two bodies |
Phase one: the puppet swarm
| Attack | Tell | Answer | Punish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summon Puppets | Dusk raises a hand and strings drop from the ceiling | Turn and kill the nearest puppet | The kill damages Dusk |
| Flying Palm | A detached hand crosses the arena | Dodge sideways | One light attack on the hand's recovery |
| Bloody Strings | Red threads connect Dusk to a puppet | Break line of sight or strafe out of the thread | Attack Dusk while he reconnects |
| Field of Puppets | Strings blanket the floor in a wide area | Move to a clear patch; do not roll through the field | Re-engage after the field fades |
The summon is the core loop. Dusk stays at range while puppets pressure you, and each puppet you destroy takes a chunk off his bar. Ignoring the adds means fighting a full-health boss with three bodies in your face; clearing them means the boss kills himself.
Phase one strategy
- Kill the first summon immediately. Do not try to rush Dusk through the adds; the damage is on the puppets.
- Use wide attacks. A Two-Handed weapon or a Destructive Phantom Edge clears a cluster faster than a single-target combo.
- Watch the strings. Bloody Strings is a line attack; stepping perpendicular to the thread avoids it and puts you in range of the puppeteer.
- Save one Phantom Edge charge for phase two. The split is the harder half.
Phase two: the split
At roughly half health, Dusk divides into two bodies. One fights in melee; the other stays back and casts. Both share the same health bar, but only one can be staggered at a time.
| Attack | Tell | Answer | Punish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin Slash | Both bodies close from opposite sides | Dodge toward the caster, not between them | One heavy attack on the caster |
| Field of Puppets | The floor fills with strings again | Find the clear patch; stay mobile | Re-engage after the fade |
| Flying Palm | The caster sends a hand while the melee body pressures | Dodge the hand, then focus the caster | Two light attacks |
| Bloody Strings | A red thread links the two bodies | Break the line by moving behind the melee body | Attack the caster while the link resets |
The split is not a dps race. Trying to burst one body while the other attacks from behind is how most runs end. Instead, kite the melee body around the caster, keep both in frame, and punish the caster's animations. The caster has less armour and longer recoveries.
Phase two strategy
- Unlock the camera if the lock keeps snapping between bodies. You need both in view, not one centred.
- Fight near the caster. The melee body has to cross the arena to reach you, which gives you a free second.
- Use the Puppeteer's Bell after the fight. It summons a puppet ally, which is excellent for the split-style bosses later in the game.
- Do not stand in the strings. Field of Puppets is a persistent hazard, not a one-off burst.
Recommended loadout
| Slot | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Two-Handed with wide arcs | Clears puppet clusters |
| Phantom Edge | Destructive edge | Area damage for the swarm |
| Skill | Endless Renewal | Executions restore HP and Sha-Chi between waves |
| Skill | Boundless Capacity | Extra accessory slot for the split phase |
| Skill | Fluid Form | Punishes the caster after a dodge |
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the puppets. They are the damage route; the boss body is a distraction until the swarm is down.
- Standing between the two phase-two bodies. Twin Slash is designed to catch that position.
- Chasing the caster across the arena. Let the melee body come to you and fight near the caster instead.
- Treating Field of Puppets as a parryable attack. It is a floor hazard; move out.
